Has True Detective earned a second chance to make a first impression? Staff writers Alex McCown and Katie Rife once more come down on slightly opposing sides, with Alex a little more optimistic about the series, while Katie remains frustrated by the ongoing lack of a compelling mystery. But both of them found the narrative decisions in “Other Lives” slightly odd, be it the unengaging family dramas sprinkled throughout the episode, or the attempt to reboot the investigation into Caspere’s death.
