Here is the film I made as a result of the fire. --https://youtu.be/GUTZ913FN4M

This fire happened to me and my family and my archive in 2008. A fellow filmmaker made the resulting film (shown here) so my family would have something to remember rather than just hearing my stories about what had burned and why it meant something to me.

Experiencing a home fire is devastating emotionally, physically and financially. The process of recovering and rebuilding can be long and complex. Here are some general steps that homeowners may go through when their home burns down:
Immediate Aftermath:
. Safety First: Evacuating safely is the priority. Once the fire is extinguished, authorities usually conduct an investigation to determine the cause.
. Temporary Housing: Finding a temporary place to live is often the next step. This could be with family, friends, or in a hotel. Some insurance policies cover temporary living expenses.
. Contact Insurance: Homeowners should contact their insurance company as soon as possible to initiate a claim. They might send an adjuster to assess the damage.
. File a Police Report: In some cases, a fire report or police report may be needed for insurance purposes.
. Seek Support: Emotional and psychological support is crucial. Many communities have services to help families cope with the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
Mid-term Steps:
. Inventory Loss: Homeowners will generally need to make a list of damaged or lost items for insurance purposes.
. Cleanup and Inspection: Before rebuilding can occur, the site often needs to be cleaned and inspected to ensure it is safe. This could include removal of debris and potentially hazardous materials.
. Temporary Fixes: Some immediate repairs might be necessary to prevent further damage, like covering holes in the roof or walls.
Long-term Steps:
. Insurance Settlement: Depending on the insurance policy, homeowners may receive a lump sum or installments to cover rebuilding and replacing lost possessions.
. Rebuilding or Relocating: Depending on the extent of damage and insurance coverage, homeowners may choose to rebuild their home or buy a new one elsewhere.
. Recovery and Resettlement: Once the insurance process is complete and the home is rebuilt or a new home is chosen, the long process of resettling begins.
Considerations:
 • Under-insurance: A significant issue many homeowners face is being under-insured, meaning their insurance coverage is not sufficient to cover all the costs of rebuilding and replacing possessions.
 • Documentation: Keeping thorough records of all transactions, communications, and steps taken after the fire is crucial for legal and insurance reasons.
 • Legal Advice: Some people opt to hire a lawyer to navigate insurance claims and any potential legal issues, especially if the fire involved neighboring properties or fatalities.
 • Community and Government Support: There are often community and government resources available to families who have lost their homes.
I am proud of this film and it did accomplish its goal. My family has seen it in each family member has a copy that will sit with their family as part of their legacy.
