MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- The McDowell County Sheriff's Office is trying to help students deal with the stresses of today's society.
School resource officer Sgt. Steve Hensley teaches the Tim Program. It's offered to all kindergarten and 5th grade students.
The Tim Program is named in honor of former DARE officer Tim Duncan who died in 2008.
Tuesday morning at Pleasant Gardens Elementary School, Tim's family shared a video with the students about his life.
Students say the program offers some important information.
"It teaches kids about not bullying, and how to avoid a bully and don't get into any trouble," 5th grade student Ethan said.
"What better legacy to leave behind than for something that's gonna help kids?" Tim's wife Jamiee Duncan said. "I mean, I can't think of a better thing. He was a teacher, you know, and that was his dream. He would have been so happy about this."
Students are taught how to handle a number of situations, like when they're approached by a bully.
This is the first year for the Tim program.
