This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The world of science is ever evolving. How can we push the boundaries of our knowledge further?

Tom Mendel is an MD/PhD student at the University of Virginia. After graduating from Duke with a degree in economics, Tom came to UVA, where he has just defended his PhD that focused on the use of adipose-derived stem cells for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. After one remaining year of medical school, Tom plans to pursue a career in academic ophthalmology, treating patients and leading a laboratory towards new scientific understanding and clinical therapies. A graduate of TJ in 2002, Tom is very grateful for the opportunity to return and share some thoughts with TJ's bright collection of minds about pushing the envelop of what we know and how we help others.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
