Oleg Orlov, 58, is the chairman of Russia's rights group , Human Rights Center Memorial. He remembers his colleague from Chechnya, Natasha Estemirova, as "the heart of Memorial." The people who abducted and murdered her in Chechnya in 2009 did manage, he admits, to stop the flow of information coming out of that strife-torn region -- for a while. But Memorial's human rights investigators are now back on the case. Another strand of Memorial's work, in addition to that of Human Rights Center, involves compiling archives, taking oral histories, and conducting public education campaigns to ensure that the terrors of Russia's Soviet past are not forgotten. "On the one hand, we do good work," says Orlov. "[But] our ranks are not expanding."
