A train from Ooty reaches Coonoor 10 minutes ahead of schedule, powered by a bio-diesel YDM-4 locomotive # 6399, and changes track to reach Platform 2. At the same time the Udagamandalam (Ooty) bound train from Mettupalayam pushed by a vintage Swiss steam engine X 37386 (converted from coal firing to oil firing in April 2011) arrives simultaneously on Platform 1. The steam hauled train was 15 minutes early, at 10:15 A.M. that morning (April 18, 2012). A Brakesman attempts to prevent passengers disembarking before the train switched tracks to enter the station. V.M.Govind Krishnan's book: "NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion", now available in its Revised Edition 2012, documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique rack railway, now in its 113th year; and to keep this engineering marvel in running condition. NMR is the only metre gauge rack railway in Asia.
