Subscriber "Darisimon" requested this Stan Rogers' song which I had not heard before. It tells the sad tale of a young crewman losing his life when a sudden squall hit the ship he was on, washing him overboard.
Songs such as Stan Rogers' "The Mary Ellen Carter" and Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" tell of how on the Great Lakes, even on a calm day, sudden squalls and storms can arise with devastating consequences.
I did not notice when I sang this that in the final chorus, the words Stan Rogers sings were slightly different from the other choruses:
The first line of the chorus throughout had been: "But I told that kid a hundred times, don't take the lakes for granted." In the final chorus I should have sung: "But I tell these kids a hundred times, don't take the lakes for granted."
(I have just realised that for some reason I sang 'winter' instead of 'summer' in verse 3).

Note in verse one, the word 'Sault' is pronounced 'Soo'. 
It comes from the French Canadian for waterfall or rapids. 
In this song, it probably refers to Sault Ste. Marie (Sault Sainte Marie), a city on the St. Marys River in Ontario, Canada, close to the US-Canada border.
