Life must have meaning, purpose and beauty. Recognizing and appreciating the deeper meaning found in life's layers and patterns empowers people to cope with adversity and disease. This opening segment from the film introduces the theme and its central conflict: the tendency to compartmentalize when resolving complex challenges, including health issues, as opposed to embracing all that is in order to make things better. Truly effective medical practice treats, at once, the diseases of the flesh as well as the diseases of the spirit. Founded in 2000, the USC Institute for Genetic Medicine Art Gallery serves as an art-framed forum for open-minded, deliberative discussions about social issues that interface with the creative process and with research findings in the fields of molecular biology, medicine and social systems. The art-in-the-workplace gallery offers a wide range of exhibits and educational symposia grounded in the belief that the arts -- visual arts, music, literature and the performing arts -- can inspire and lead us out of the bleak terrain of fear, prejudice, superstition and chaos into community and the harmony that promotes healing.
