(10 Dec 2018) The global fashion sector addressed climate change by launching the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action at the COP24 climate conference in Katowice on Monday. Leading fashion brands, retailers, supplier organizations, a major shipping company, as well as global NGO WWF International have agreed to collectively address the climate impact the fashion sector has across its entire value chain. Patricia Espinosa, the executive secretary, UN Climate Change, said the charter comes at a time when "we needed it most." The charter recognizes the crucial role of fashion as a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and as a sector with multiple opportunities to reduce emissions. The charter is open for other companies and organizations to join. The charter hopes to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and defines issues ranging from decarbonization of the production phase, selection of climate friendly and sustainable materials, low-carbon transport, improved consumer dialogue and awareness, working with the financing community and policymakers to catalyze scalable solutions, and exploring circular business models.
