Gisborne’s riverbanks were blasted with colour yesterday at the 2018 Gisborne Harriers OWD Colour Run. Despite overcast conditions and the national surf lifesaving championships drawing a crowd, more than 1200 people turned out to cover the downtown riverbanks with an explosion of colour. http://www.gisborneherald.co.nz/video https://www.facebook.com/gisborneherald https://www.youtube.com/gisborneherald Event organiser Arish Naresh was thrilled with the turnout. “We had between 1200 and 1500 people participating, which makes this the most successful event we’ve run.” The aim of the colour run was to champion diversity and promote the message that it is OK to be different. “There were lots of young families attending, which is fantastic. “The earlier we can show kids the importance of embracing diversity and creating an inclusive community the better,” said Mr Naresh. One participant commented on how fantastic it was to have so many people turn out on a Sunday morning to have fun together, with no need for alcohol. “The only stimulant is fun and colour.” Anyone that came with a clean T-shirt was expected to leave with a multicoloured one said Mr Naresh. “Those with shirts not adequately coloured at the end of the event were given special treatment with whatever coloured powder was left over.” The growth of the event since it began has encouraged organisers to run it again next year and look to build on its popularity. “We will definitely run the event again and hope to make it bigger. “It would be great to see people coming in from out of town to participate, which would further promote our message and Gisborne as well.” “Without the efforts of our volunteers and the support of sponsors, this event wouldn’t happen,” said Mr Naresh. “Huge thanks to all of those who contributed to making the event the success it was and we look forward to next year.” Filmed and Edited by Ben Cowper SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=gisborneherald
