United Nations, UN, 23 June 2009 - The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Under Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Sha Zukang have taken part in the annual United Nations awards ceremony for Innovative Public Service. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ban said the awards recognise the dedication of public servants to "seize opportunity" to make a difference, even during this time of global financial crisis. He said "For too many, the daily devastations of persistent poverty and inequality are being made worse by energy and food insecurity. The global financial and economic crisis and the onset of climate change are further burdens. The challenge for public servants is to seize opportunity whenever it is presented. These awards recognize your inspirational examples in delivering results."
