United Nations, 23 March 2009 - At the opening of the INTERPOL-DPKO Conference on International Policing in Building Peace, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, highlighted the rapid and continuing need for more police in UN peacekeeping. Ban gave statistics saying that in 1999 there were 2400, and in 2009  10629 police officers working in peacekeeping operations. He stressed the need for specialists police officers, and encouraged Member States to contribute police officers and in particular female police officers.
"The rule of law is fundamental to restoring and rebuilding war torn societies" he said.
