The Chinese character 有 (yǒu) roughly means "have". The sentence structure of:

subject + have + object/possession

Nǐ yǒu mèimei ma?
你有妹妹吗？
Do you have younger sisters?

Nǐ yǒu jiějie ma?
你有姐姐吗？ 
Do you have elder sisters?

Wǒ yǒu/méiyǒu jiějie/mèimei.
我有/没有姐姐/妹妹.
I have/ don't have elder sisters/ younger sisters.

Some new words introduced in today's lesson that are used in the sentences above include:

哥哥/弟弟 (gēge/ dìdi) = older brother / younger brother
一只狗 (yì zhī gǒu) = a dog
猫 (māo) = cat
