At our monthly sing-around at the sheltered accommodation in which I live, my friend Sylvia was asked if she knew this song. She, like me, knew it but could not remember the lyrics nor the tune, so I said I would look it up.
I remember it as a song from one of the musical entertainments my mother used to orgainize when I was a youngster when it was sung by a young girl, so I was quite surprised when I discovered that it could be sung by a man (with slight adjustments to the lyrics where appropriate) and had been recorded by none other than Frank Sinatra with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra. Their version was quite jazzy, but in my interpretation, I am singing it as I remember it from my younger days, using chords I have worked out myself.
The song was written by Joseph McCarthy and Harry Tierney

G D7 G
In her sweet little Alice blue gown
                   A7
When she first wandered down into town
                D G
She was both proud and shy as she felt every eye
             A7 D D7
And in every shop window she’d primp, passing by
               G D7 G
Then in manner of fashion, she'd frown
               B7 A7
And the world seemed to smile all around
          C G Em7
Till it wilted she wore it, she'll always adore it
       C D7 G
Her sweet little Alice blue gown
