(1 Jan 1985) SP07018501 BRAZIL RUNNING San Silvestre road race Carlos Lopez, Portugal's Olympic marathon gold medallist, won the traditional Sao Silvestre new year's eve foot race Monday with an expertly timed sprint finish that brought him victory in 36 minutes 43.07 seconds. Lopez won the race in 1982 but missed out last year because he was training for the Olympics. "I had the strategy, the strength and the luck" said the 37-year-old who pulled ahead of second placed Brazilian Jose Joao Da Silva, 29, during the last 2 kms of the 12,640 metres race comprising 7,000 runners from 19 countries. Portugal's Rosa Mota, 27, the bronze medalist in the women's marathon at the Olympics, won the women's race in 43:35.57. It was her fourth consecutive victory in the event, which has been held for the last 60 years. In the men's race the early leaders were Da Silva of Brazil, Aguilar of Chile and Marcos Hernandez from Mexico. Lopez was content to hand back until the halfway mark when he moved into the lead with Da Silva. Lopez paced the Brazilian for more than a kilometre then pulled ahead during the 2 kms climb up the steep Consolacao Hill near the end of the race. In her race, Motta pulled into an early lead and held it against the powerful strides of Sabino, a barefoot runner, who is only 14 years old. Sabino drew level with Motta during the last stages of the race but Motta had the extra strength in the final sprint. The same pair also finished first and second in last year's race.
