In a bustling street of Kolkata, some women are busy offering prayers to goddess Durga, while others sit beside it on a makeshift counter handing out flyers and accepting whatever small donations come their way. These are the sex workers of Sonagachi. Ostracised by the society, the sex workers have managed to erect a marquee after five years to ensure that they celebrate ‘Durga Puja’ with gusto and not amid prejudice. ‘Durga Puja’ is an annual four-day-long festival dedicated to goddess Durga, synonymous with power and feminine force. ‘Durga Puja’ marks the victory of Durga over Mahishasura. It is believed that during the festival the goddess descends on earth to rid it of demons and bless her devotees with happiness and prosperity. No one knows Mumbai better than us. #WeUncoverMumbai.
