A supportive ex-cop tells me he thinks Rich Paul was targeted by the FBI because he's a disobedient who's annoying and in-your-face.  People like that, he says, make easier targets because authorities take a personal dislike to them.  On the other hand, Paul is effective at getting attention and sparking debate. The trick is to do those things while minimizing unpopularity.  But at least he's doing them! 

A note, regarding "the other side of this story."  When authorities are accused, I'd normally feel a need to call them, get their rebuttal and record the entire interaction on tape.  But their wiretap law has a chilling effect on calls of that type.  So... I generally choose to practice overobedience - and decline to call for their opinions.  In this sense, their bad law saves me time and costs them the chance to easily present their views.   I'll generally still try and get those views when I bump into 'em and can do so without interrupting.
