Emil Constantinescu speaks at Oslo Freedom Forum 2011 Soft Power and Global Peace www.OsloFreedomForum.com @OsloFF #OsloFF Emil Constantinescu, president of Romania from 1996 to 2000, advocates a change in the way countries negotiate with one another. In the past century, nations have used their strength and influence, rather than understanding of the "other," to forge agreements. Constantinescu hopes that a "soft power" approach will become a hallmark of 21st century diplomacy, but he is not idealistic enough to believe that it will completely replace traditional methods. A culture of increased understanding would not only spread peace, but bring people to the realization that they have more in common than they may think. The people dying for freedom in the Middle East and North Africa today are not so unlike those who sacrificed their lives to free Romania from the Soviet Union. Ultimately, Constantinescu sees faith as the "highest common denominator" between all people striving for peace.
