Philadelphia Zoo Stork and Nature's Way

On this very windy day (it was Mother's Day, too, which made it worse for me), nature had its way in the Zoo.

One of the saddle-billed storks in the Zoo's African plains section had been posing for me while I recorded a video of it.  Suddenly, it flapped its wings, and ran to another part of the plains area and began pecking at the ground.

Then the stork picked up what appeared to be either a mouse or a baby bird, shook it violently, and attempted to swallow it.  It took several attempts and eventual tearing the unfortunate creature, whatever it was, into pieces before the stork was successful in getting it all down. 

This was one of those rare instances when nature has its violent way in a zoo.  As you can probably tell from reading this - I am not a big fan of nature's way.

The fact that zoo animals are safe and protected from this sort of violent death is a big part of why I love zoos.
