Which notifications should you pay attention to on Twitter?

An important question regarding Twitter is which notifications you should pay attention to. On Twitter you will be sent messages, mentioned in tweets, and have your content re-tweeted. To start with, you will want to completely ignore your messages. You will be spammed with so many messages, I have received over 100 at this point, that it is a waste of time to sift through to find anything genuine. Also, you will receive zero personal benefit for interacting with a message. Most messages contain link spam and it is unlikely you will be able to start a productive conversation with the user. Mentions on the other hand are very valuable, regardless of whether or not they are indeed spam. Many of the mention you will receive, at least to start, are automated. In fact, if we take a look at the mentions I have received up to this point every one appears to be automated. However, the reason why mention are much more valuable than messages is for the purpose of search engine optimization (SEO). Every single tweet is indexed by Google. Let's do a quick Google search of my my main Twitter username. So we want people to mention us as much as possible and re-tweet our content. Part of my daily Twitter regimen includes re-tweeting everyone who mentions me. Positive reinforcement works very well in the universe of social media, and people will continue to mention you in Tweets, and even thank you for interacting with their content. It takes less than a minute to re-tweet, and it's the easiest way to start getting indexed on Google!
