Twitter pledges to confront harassment issues on its platform

In a House hearing Wedneday, Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette acknowledged that Twitter has "experienced its own sexual harassment problem" to confront.

Citing an Amnesty International report over the harassment women face on the platform, the congresswoman questioned why the company has been inconsistent in addressing users who are using the platform to threaten and harass others.

"We don't believe that we can create a digital public square for people if they don't feel safe to participate in, in the first place," Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said. Twitter intends to "increase the health of this public space," he added.

The CEO also said the company will launch an initiative this year that includes a transparency report to make that incident data more public.

"We don't feel it's fair that the victims of abuse and harassment have to do the work to report it," Dorsey said.
