Texu Kim: "Splash!!" (2009/12) - original version, Isang Yun Festival Orchestra, Chi-Yong Jung, (Concert Hall, Seoul Art Center, 19 September 2009). Image is "No. 0" by U Kang Jung. The composer has described this work in the following program note: "Water balloons of different colors and shapes drop rapidly from the sky. As they hit the ground, the balloons burst and water splashes everywhere. Several principles in physics such as gravity, tension, motion and preservation, are related with this process. Complicated calculations with a number of mathematical functions using many variables are required to predict where the water drops will bounce. Children, however, only need to think of joy and fun refreshing water provides. 'Splash!!' begins from a musical scene, which reminds of such a children's water balloon play. The form of this composition is A(vivo, volante/Lento) -- B(Allegretto) -- A' -- C (Adagio) -- B' -- A'' -- Coda. Two main themes, presented at the beginnings of A and B, constitute the whole composition. Their strong characteristic in rhythm and sound lead a mostly pleasant atmosphere. As diverse composition techniques are applied, listeners' predictions take a surprising turn. And this makes the piece more intriguing."
