Get ready for big changes- from December 1st 2012 you should be dialing 10 digits for every local call in Austin and most of Central Texas. This is in preparation for a new area code being "overlaid" onto the 512 area. Numbers with the new 737 area code will begin being distributed July 1st 20130- just a few months before we are expected to run out of available 512 numbers. If you have a 512 nothing will change for you except having to get in the habit of always dialing 10 digits- and from July 1st 2013 asking whether someone's "local" number is 512 or 737. And of course all the reprogramming... of your cell phone contacts, fax machine, PBX systems, alarm systems, call forwarding settings, etc. Better start planning for it now.
