His father was murdered by Stalin, his brother killed at Stalingrad and the rest murdered by the Nazis. When he came back to his village, he was the only one to have survived the war. He was offered a job as a teacher which he turned down. The cousin of his father had survived in a different part of the USSR and they helped him to study.
