Sanders: Trump respects outgoing Defense Secretary

(21 Dec 2018) US President Donald Trump has announced that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis will retire at the end of February. White House Pres Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Thursday, when asked if Syria had a role in Mattis' departure, that the two men "have a good relationship but sometimes they disagree." "The president has a great deal of respect for Secretary Mattis," Sanders said. Mattis met the president at the White House Thursday afternoon, Sanders said. Trump said on Twitter that a new Defense Secretary will be named soon. Trump's announcement came a day after he surprised U.S. allies and members of Congress by announcing the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria. Trump told House Republican leaders earlier Thursday that he will not sign Senate-passed legislation to keep parts of the government operating through early February because the measure does not include 5 billion US dollars he has demanded to pay for a wall he promised to build on the border with Mexico. "Democrats are playing political games and they have to decide whether or not they hate the president more than they love this country," Sanders told reporters.
