(7 Dec 2018) JOHN DAVID WASHINGTON ON HIS GLOBE NOMINATION: "One of the best days of my life."
John David Washington says being nominated for a Golden Globe was one of the best days of his life.
The star, who was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in "BlacKkKlansman," was with his father Denzel when he received the news.
"We were watching it on screen together and when they announced the name we were just stunned," says Washington. "We didn't have the words, so we just hugged and then we ate some chicken wings later. So that was the reaction, it was great. You know I heard from my siblings, my mom was so proud. It was a great day."
Washington was speaking Thursday night (6DEC18), while attending the GQ Men of the Year party in Los Angeles.
Also attending was "Homecoming" star Stephan James, who was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series.
"I got a call at like 5:30 in the morning from my publicist and from my manager screaming," recalled James. "I couldn't really make out what they were saying but somewhere between it all, I heard that I had been nominated, that the show had been nominated and Julia (Roberts) had been nominated and that a film that I'm really proud of 'Beale Street' had been nominated as well. What a way to wake up."
Jeff Goldblum was also in high spirits as he arrived at the event, celebrating for Wes Anderson's "Isle of Dogs," which received a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Animated.
"I was sent a notification that this movie 'Isle of Dogs' that I have a little part in is nominated for a Golden Globe, so I was very happy for Wes Anderson, genius West Anderson and everybody involved with that movie," he said.
The GQ party celebrates the men and women who did amazing things in 2018.
"Crazy Rich Asians" star Henry Golding, who was named the publication's Star of the Year, described the honor as "such an honor."
"What a lineup. Jonah Hill, Michael B. Jordan, Serena Williams and this nobody from 2018 who's like struck it lucky. It was such an honor. I've been a fan of GQ for the longest time. They've always been at the forefront of introducing, not only fashion, but like common everyday things to men around the world. And so for me it was, you know all four of us are different careers – different areas in our life or positions in life. Serena has just become a beautiful mother. She's still kicking ass in the tennis game. Michael B. Jordan is the next just hero of everything. He's a phenomenal actor. Jonah has just gone into directing. Myself this is sort of my foray into Hollywood and so it's beautiful that dynamic you know? I'm just honored that they even considered me."
Michael B. Jordan was named the Leader of the Year, Jonah Hill, Director of the Year and Serena Williams, Champion of the Year.
