Maneka seeks ban on children participating in Dahi Handis

Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has demanded a ban on participation of children under 12 years of age in 'Dahi Handi' events. In her letter to the state government, Gandhi has asked for banning participation of children aged between 5-12 years in the event. Calling Dahi Handi a dangerous performance, Gandhi has claimed that many children suffer serious injuries during the event. In some cases, children have also died during the event. Two boys died during practice last week. A 14-year-old boy died on August 9 and a 19-year-old died on Sunday in Mumbai during practice. The Mumbai Police has issued a warning to all govinda mandals against using children in the event. BJP leader Poonam Mahajan had written a letter to Gandhi in this regard.
