The ToneWay Mountain Music Collection is teaching me many songs that are new to me, this being one of them. The song is probably of Irish origin and was popular in America during the 19th century and according to Wikipedia may have been: ...a source of a folk etymology for the word gringo that states that the Mexicans misheard U.S. troops singing "green grow" during the Mexican-American War. (I have also heard this of another song I uploaded some time ago, namely Green Grow The Rushes-Ho)
