From the beginning it was a debate forced on city leaders. Houston City Council member Toni Lawrence secured the signatures of two fellow council members to call a special meeting to address 287G today. It's the federal policy that allows local police officers to check the legal status of someone they've stopped. Lawrence wants the Houston Police Department to take part in the program. But Mayor Bill White has said the program is simply too expensive at $2 million annually. White is interested in implementing a program called Secured Communities. In it jailers would check the status of detainees rather than officers on the streets. But because only 4 council members showed up Wednesday afternoon there was not enough for a quorum. City rules require at least 8 members be present for a meeting. Lawrence says she was disappointed her fellow council members did not attend but that's not going to stop her from pushing the issue. Several people who are against 287G also attended the failed council meeting. They called the policy racist. Those council members who did show up: Mike Sullivan, Anne Clutterbuck, and Pam Holm. Lawrence vowed to bring the issue up again in November!
