Westminster Abbey has been closely connected with the English and later British monarchy for nearly a thousand years and has hosted coronations since the 11th century. The present Gothic church was largely rebuilt beginning in the 13th century under Henry III and contains royal tombs, memorials and the graves of major figures from British political, scientific and cultural history. Its extraordinary concentration of monuments and ceremonial traditions makes the abbey one of the most important religious and historical buildings in the United Kingdom.
