If you played Splatoon, you'd know that Inklings can't swim in water, as water is lethal to their ink-made bodies. In Smash, if their feet can still touch the ground, they'll be fine standing in water; they can even refill their ink in shallow water! But if they're in deep water, the poor little things will automatically flail around and take damage, making their drownings more serious than for characters who can actually swim in canon. They share this “quirk” and attention to detail with Sonic (he can’t swim, either), and both Charizard and Incineroar (both of them are Fire-type Pokémon).
