(8 Dec 2018) Dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators protested on Saturday in Tunisia’s capital against Israel and its policies toward the Palestinians.
The protest was held outside the Tourism Ministry, because the recently named Tourism Minister Rene Trabelsi is Jewish, unusual in this Muslim country.
The protesters were angry about expanding Israeli settlements and call for a Palestinian state.
The crowd included left-wing groups, who are trying to push a law that would make it a crime to normalise relations with Israel.
Tunisia's President played down the proposed law.
Moderate Islamist party Ennahdha also warned such a law could hurt Tunisia's relations with western nations and international organisations.
Tunisia, like most Arab countries, does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.
Tunisia was long seen as a model of tolerance in the region but has faced growing Islamic extremism.
