The Art of War is a Classic Chinese Military Treatise Written during the 6th Century BC by Sun Tzu composed of the following Essays:
1. Estimates
2. Waging War
3. Offensive Strategy
4. Dispositions
5. Energy
6. Weaknesses and Strengths
7. Maneuver
8. The Nine Variables
9. Marches
10. Terrain
11. The Nine Variables of Ground
12. Attack by Fire
13. Employment of Secret Agents

Incredibly, the Book has been one of the oldest and most read strategy & war guide for business, war-fare, politics and hardcore competitions. It was in the year 1782 that a French Jesuit by the name Jean Joseph Marie Amiot took the initiative to translate this masterpiece into the European tongue. Ever since, it has been said to influence the greats like Napoleon to even people like General Douglas MacArthur.

Some of the brilliant pieces of nuggets I managed to unearth are:
• A clever fighter not only wins but also excels at winning with ease.
• Be swift in war; never prolong war because it is expensive.
• Be swiftly on the move to places you are least expected.
• If the enemy rests, harass him; if he has food, starve him out.
• If you cannot succeed, do not use troops. If you are not in danger, do not fight.
• Maneuvering with an army is advantageous, with an undisciplined mob, disastrous.
• Take the country whole and intact.
• To capture is better than destruction.
• Warfare is based on deception.
• Whoever is first in the field is strong.

Personally, I felt this was a book on tactical leadership & proactive foresight in a political world as stated in the quote "Leadership is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, humanness, courage and sternness. I think he summed it best when he said to win you have to know yourself and know your enemy.

Overall an invaluable collection of great thought by a man who was born ages ago and whose words will remain immortalized for eternity.

Overall rating -- 9 out of 10.
