Chanel Lewis, identified as the suspect in the rape and murder of slain Queens jogger Karina Vetrano, has given “detailed incriminating statements and admissions” about the crime, police say. The New York Police Department said Lewis, 20, of East New York, is in custody. According to ABC New York, Lewis was “formally charged with murder in the 2nd degree” on February 5. The slain jogger’s mother, Cathy Vetrano, emotionally confronted Lewis at his first court hearing February 6, “A savage murderer,” Cathy Vetrano said of Chanel Lewis. “He f—ing murdered my daughter, my beautiful innocent daughter,” she said, according to the Daily News, before saying to Lewis directly. “Now your nightmare begins.” She also said, according to the newspaper, “He should be in hell and burned in hell.” News broke that the suspect was in custody on February 4, and, CBS Local reported, through sources, that police believe they have “solid evidence” against him, including a DNA match. Police also say he confessed to every step of the homicide.
