Ann Tanaka presents how to start plants from seeds, potting mix, fertilizer, watering, transplanting, plant care, and gentle pest control, focusing on leafy greens and tomatoes. She will also describe other things that are easy for the backyard gardener to grow in the ground, such as papaya, but will concentrate on container veggies. Ann Tanaka is a Master Gardener under the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. She also did a minimum of 40 hours of volunteer work a year teaching people research-based information on home gardening. Ann works as an engineer for the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command at Pearl Harbor. Her job experiences include working as a Civil Engineer, Environmental Engineer, and now a General Engineer for our Public Works Department. She is also a certified volunteer for the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery program, as she is a cancer survivor. She hopes to convey that she has no special skills, no background in farming, not much time, and only a tiny lot that is not conducive to gardening, but even she can grow something fresh and nutritious to eat. So if she can do it, so can you!
