The last day of Summer, Friday September 21, despite the unsettled weather we decided to go for a drive heading west from Sequim on U.S. Route 101 to visit Lake Crescent, the town of Forks, and then on the way back taking 112 W to Cape Flattery, the northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States. The scenery along the drive to Lake Crescent was breathtaking! We stopped for a short visit at Lake Crescent Lodge and a roadside overlook, then continued west on 101 intending to drive the remaining 36 miles to Forks. This inland section of U.S. 101 is straight and rather monotonous, so when we spotted a road sign to Cape Flattery taking 113 N we took the exit. The scenery along Burnt Mountain Road was much more interesting. Reaching the town of Clallam Bay, we turned onto 112 W that runs along the shoreline the remainder of 28 miles to Cape Flattery. Although we were on the road most of the day, walking the Cape Flattery Trail was a phenomenal experience!
