Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smiths Munnings, who has won only once in five previous starts, split horses in the lane Saturday afternoon and powered on to a 5 ¼-length victory in the 25th running of the Grade 2, $250,000 Woody Stephens Stake for three-year-olds at seven furlongs.

Named for the late British equine artist, Sir Alfred Munnings, the Speightstown colt earned his first victory since breaking his maiden at first asking at Saratoga last July 26. He did it with a flair, as his time of 1:20.85 on the fast main track just missed Left Banks track record of 1:20.17, set on July 4, 2002. Left Bank, like Munnings, was trained by Todd Pletcher for owners Magnier, Tabor and Smith.
