In today's lesson, Teacher Chelsea introduces two important Mandarin Chinese characters:

"的 (de)" and "地 (de)"

Mandarin Chinese beginner learners often confuse the use of "得(de)" and "的 (de)". 

"的 (De)" is most often used for modifying nouns. "地 (De)" is most often used with adverbial phrases.

Another form of "de" is “得 (de)”. “得 (de)” is used as a complement to indicate how an action works. The sentence pattern is “v.+ 得+adv.”. For example: 长得好看 (zhǎng de hǎokàn) “to look beautiful.”

"得 (de)" is a particle word meaning nothing and is used between Verb and Adverb to indicate modification.

"得 (děi)" means must or have to, for example:

Nǐ děi zhùyì shuōhuà.
你得注意说话.
You must pay attention to you words.
