This preview performance of Section I from Ocean Trilogy was filmed at the Monterey Bay Aquarium on September 21, 2016, during the Oceans ’16 Gala Dinner. Ocean Trilogy is a new multidisciplinary performance highlighting innovations and new possibilities from cutting-edge ocean research. Choreographer Fran Spector Atkins of SpectorDance and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute are investigating how dance and science can work together to heighten awareness and promote conversation about ocean health. The full Ocean Trilogy piece blends stunning underwater film footage, audio sound bites from filmed interviews with ocean researchers, contemporary classical and rap music, staging elements, and a variety of dance styles including contemporary, ballet, and urban. The contrast of elements generates an exciting composite that communicates science in a way that is informative, visceral, and uplifting.
