Management Of Lagos State Model College, Kankon Guarantees Students Safety Amidst Kidnap Threat

The management of Lagos State Model College, Kankon (LASMOCK) at Badagry, Lagos, has dispelled rumor that the school is soaked in fear of impending kidnap as stated in a letter sent to the school by kidnappers. The school also insisted that safety of both students and staffs of the model college (both junior and secondary schools) is 100% guaranteed

In a visit to the school, our correspondents gathered that school activities were going on as usual in a serene environment and students were seen moving about and attending classes without fear of being kidnapped.

When asked how the school has been managing the panic coming from Guardians, one of the senior staffs of the school said that parents have been cooperative and are not bothered about the news being circulated.

“I think it is a normal thing. They called to confirm if the threat was true, we spoke with them and assured them that no such thing will happen in the school. When they also visited the school and saw the number of security personnel which the state has provided, they were comforted. Overall, the parents have been co-operating with the school and we are very optimistic and on top of the situation.” He said.

He, however, showed displeasure that the matter was blown out of proportion, and that has got parents and guardians worried.

“When the matter got to the media, it was excessively communicated to the public and in the wrong way, thereby making parents and guardians unnecessarily worried. We are assuring everybody that no kidnap will happen in this school and all of us at LASMOCK are safe.”

Commenting on parents withdrawing their wards from the school due to the kidnap threat, another staff of the school discredited the assertion saying the school is on Sallah break and academic activities will resume on Tuesday. He added that the school will, however, be concerned if parents failed to return students after the break.

“Parents are taking children home because of the Sallah break and not the kidnap threat. On the other hand, if by Tuesday when the break will be over and students are not back in school, then we can say maybe they are afraid of the kidnap, but as of this moment, no parent has taken any student as a result of the threat.”

Disclosing to our correspondent how safe the school is, a member of the community said that no kidnapper can successfully operate except the security personnel have being withdrawn. She further revealed that the school is not close to the river thus preventing any kidnapper from escaping easily.

“Behind the school is a road that leads back to Owode-Apa road and the river in this community is not close to the school. Before the kidnappers will escape, we are sure they will have been caught because security men are patrolling every hour.”

Speaking with some students in the school, they disclosed that the Principals had thought them some safety tips, which will ensure that they remain unharmed.

“The Principal asked us to not talk to strangers, we should not walk alone and we should not go towards the bush.”

“We feel fear whenever we are alone but the presence of the Police and Soldiers in the school always make us feel safe,” another student said.
