Third hike of June 9, our goal was to summit Little Yellow Mountain but we didn't quite make it. We drove up to the Jerry Creek Rd gate and got permission from the landowners to park in their driveway. It started raining, so we waited in the car until it stopped. The road is steep to the Audobon Society cabin, steep enough that I wouldn't drive on it if the gate was open. From the cabin the road grade lessened and it stayed beneath the trees with creeping undergrowth. Grassy Gap, the low point on Grassy Ridge between Little Yellow Mountain and Grassy Ridge Bald, is a great spot. We had open views of Grassy Ridge Bald and Roan Mountain high above. We took another short break at the mowed picnic area with a bench overlooking the peaks.

From there the road climbs steeply and the condition quickly deteriorated. Soon the road ended and we were following a very faint county boundary path that was completely overgrown. Thorns and nettles were knee-to-waist high, and these obscured old barbed wire from the gate that followed the boundary. Then it started pouring, and we waited for over 45 min with the rain never stopping. After standing still under our umbrellas we decided to give up, ~1,500 ft from the summit at elevation 5,180 ft. This seems like a bushwhack best left for the winter, the weeds were gnarly and uncomfortable. 

Hike was 3.1 miles with 1,184 feet elevation gain in 2 hours and 30 minutes.
