Am I just being deliberately shocking and provocative with my headline today? Yes and no... of course not all children of drinkers go on to have a problem with alcoholism. But if you witnessed your parents unnatural relationship with alcohol you have a significantly increased chance of being addicted to alcohol.

One of the biggest problems with alcohol is that it is everywhere. Unlike cigarettes it is freely advertised on television, movie screens and billboards. The supermarket liquor aisle just keeps getting bigger and bigger but none of these have the dramatic effect on children that the behaviour of their parents does.

For nearly twenty years we watch our parents drink a magical liquid, that we are told is strictly for adults only. What happens when you tell someone they can’t have something? I will tell you... the law of scarcity kicks in and they become obsessed with getting it.

These children turn 18 or 21 and start to drink the magic liquid that they have been denied for years. It tastes disgusting but because they have witnessed so many people appearing to enjoy it, they assume they must be wrong about the taste of alcohol and push through to addiction. 

If you are considering stopping drinking alcohol or you have already given up and need some evidence that you have done the right thing, then this is a very good reason. Nothing programs the impressionable minds of children like learned behaviour. If you drink alcohol in front of your children you are showing them how to consume an addictive drug.
