Why Study abroad? Is it worth it?
Hey friends! Many students ask me whether studying abroad is a good idea or not. That’s why I chose this subject for today’s live video.
If you are watching the replay, thank you so much  I hope these tips can help you make a better decision.
The most significant lesson I learned about studying abroad is that you have to trust your guts (instincts). What does that mean? You have to believe in your abilities. You have to believe you can speak English even though you are going to make mistakes. You have to let go of your fears and really embrace this experience.
Studying abroad will be an amazing experience, if you really make the most of it. And I’m not talking about the tourist experience, I’m talking about the language one. The biggest problem students have when they decide to study abroad is that they don’t use this experience to its fullest.
The country you choose also needs to be meaningful for you. Don’t choose a country based on prices and fame or popularity. Choose a country you feel connected with. Choose a country you can imagine yourself living in. Choose a country you want to learn about. Remember, English is not just about words but about experiencing the culture. IF you choose a country for the wrong reasons, you will not enjoy it as much.
Choosing the school is also very important. As I said, studying abroad is worth it, but only if you are going with the right intentions to the right places. Many times, students pay for the course and don’t even know what school they are going to. They have no background, they nothing about the school system and methodology or the materials they are going to use. IF your purpose is to learn English this should be your number one priority
The culture shock is real! You may feel you are prepared and all you need is money, but it doesn’t work that way. I have friends who dreamed about living abroad, but returned after one or two months because of the cultural shock and homesickness. The course abroad won’t be worth it if you are not emotionally prepared. How do you prepare for that? You can start by getting to know the place you are going to; read books, watch videos, listen to podcasts about the place you are going to. Of course you are only going to get a better picture of what it is going to be like when you get there, but this is a good way to start. And, if you choose the country well, you will definitely reduce this problem.
Finally, can you only learn English if you study abroad? Absolutely not!!! You can learn from wherever you are. You need to be connected. This is the era of technology. Stay connected and you will learn. The internet has made it possible for millions of people to learn the culture and the language. All you gotta do is focus. When we travel abroad we have less distractions and responsibilities. (work, school, family, to name a few). However, when you study abroad, the destination becomes the biggest distraction of all. Many of us don’t want to study, we just want to enjoy the place. So, you need to decide whether you want a vacation experience or a language one and as we are more connected than ever, YouTube can bring you closer to the culture of the language. It can bring you closer to the countries you want to visit and therefore to a better English.
