Our forest superhero José Román Carrera recently traveled from Petén, Guatemala to Washington, DC with Marcedonio Cortave, the director of ACOFOP, an organization that represents communities in Guatemala's Maya Biosphere Reserve. Their mission? To share the astonishing achievements of the area’s forest communities with U.S. congressional staffers with hopes to gain more support for the incredibly successful conservation work done there.⁣

The community forest concessions that sit within the majestic, 5-million-acre (2.1-million-hectare) Maya Biosphere Reserve have maintained a near-zero deforestation rate for 14 years—20 times less than other parts of the reserve—while creating thousands of jobs that benefit more than 14,000 people. And they have achieved all this in the face of dire threats: from narco-traffickers to corporate and foreign interests that pose an increasing threat to the communities who were granted rights to their areas as part of Guatemala’s 1996 Peace Accords.⁣
