Matthias (Ulli) Nollert is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering. He received his BS degree from the University of Virginia and his PhD from Cornell University. His research is in the area of biomedical engineering. In particular, he is interested in how mechanical forces can affect biological processes. This has several applications in understanding how blood flow affects the biology of the human vasculature, including cell adhesion and tissue engineering. He has numerous publications and presentations. His work was most recently presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions Meeting held in Dallas, Texas in November 2013. In addition to his research, Nollert teaches classes ranging from a freshman engineering orientation course to a graduate level class on bioengineering principles. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
