(20 Oct 2018) Amnesty International called on Saturday for an independent and transparent investigation on the killing the prominent Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Samah Hadid, Middle East director of campaigns for Amnesty International, said in Beirut that the Saudi investigation lack transparency and credibility. The Saudi narrative of Khashoggi's death, alleged to have occurred in a brawl following discussions with visiting officials in the consulate, contrasts with Turkish pro-government media reports that a Saudi hit squad, including an autopsy expert, traveled to Istanbul to kill Khashoggi and dispose of his body, which has not yet been found. Hadid says an independent investigation ordered by U.N. would be necessary to avoid a "Saudi whitewash" of circumstances surrounding the killing. Despite widespread outrage over the killing of the columnist for The Washington Post, it is unclear to what extent the top leadership of Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally and a powerful player in a volatile region, would be held accountable for what human rights activists describe as an extrajudicial killing by Saudi agents. Hadid described the killing of Khashoggi as " part of a broader crackdown on dissent that is taking place in the kingdom and we worry that if the Saudi Arabian authorities get away with this killing of Jamal then this will send a chilling effect and obviously there will be negative consequences to those in Saudi Arabia who dare to speak out" Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: https://twitter.com/AP_Archive Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/APArchives Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/APNews/ You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/d7982f3edb47753a6894d23e5e702565
