Why waste prevention is the key for a sustainable society

Technology alone cannot solve the problem of waste generation or even tackle its environmental impacts. How can we achieve a sustainable society without understanding all facets of the problem? This talk aims to open this door showing how important it is to implement waste prevention policies not only in waste management but also in technology innovation for products' manufacturing.

no NICS Ana Paula Bortoleto has a vast experience on waste prevention, including regulations, technologies and individuals' behaviour. Though her research interests are broad, she is keenly interested in the impacts of consumption behaviour and public policies on solid waste management and on the environment. Her interdisciplinary perspective has given her a broad understanding on how different areas of knowledge may contribute together in solving not only solid waste problems but also environmental problems in general. She is a former Marie Curie FP7 Fellow and currently an Assistant Professor on solid waste management at the State University of Campinas. Recently, she wrote a book titled "Waste Prevention Policy and Behaviour" published by Routledge.

Engenheira civil pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2003) com mestrado e doutorado em engenharia ambiental pela Universidade de Tóquio (2006, 2009). Trabalhou como pesquisadora associada no Departamento de Geografia da Universidade de Sheffield (2011, EU FP7 Marie Curie Fellowship) e no Instituto Max-Planck para Desenvolvimento Humano (2013, Alexander von-Humboldt Fellowship). Atualmente é professora doutora (MS3) no Departamento de Saneamento e Ambiente da Universidade Estadual de Campinas, responsavel pela area de tratamento e gerenciamento de residuos solidos. Na sua area de pesquisa, atua, principalmente,nos seguintes temas: prevenção de resíduos sólidos, análise de comportamento pro-ambiental e fatores sociais, análise de ciclo de vida, sustentabilidade e impactos ambientais, econômicos e sociais do gerenciamento de resíduos sólidos This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
