NOTE: One of Early Jazz giants, Hartzell Strathdene "Tiny" PARHAM (1900, Winnipeg, Canada -- 1943, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) was a Canadian-born American jazz bandleader and pianist of African-American descent. He grew up in Kansas City where he worked as a pianist at the Eblon Theatre being mentored by the ragtime pianist James Scott, and later touring with territory bands in the Southwestern United States. In 1926 he moved to Chicago, where he led several small bands, worked as an arranger and talent scout at Paramount Records, and played organ and piano in theatre. He also made 38 recordings between 1927 -1930, as an accompanist for Johnny Dodds and several female blues singers as well as with his own band. Parham favored the violin and many of his records have a sophisticated violin solos, along with the typical upfront tuba, horns and reeds. After 1930 Parham toured with his band and played organ in a Chicago roller-skating rink ; his last recordings were made in 1940. Tiny Parham died in a dressing room in Milwaukee during a show in 1943.
