Mentoring Achievement Award
Susanne Wells, PhD
Director, Epithelial Carcinogenesis and Stem Cell Program Division of Oncology, Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute Professor of Pediatrics

For Susanne (Susa) Wells, PhD, energetic mentoring of young researchers has been instrumental in recruiting the best and brightest young scientific minds to Cincinnati Children’s.

As past director of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, Wells guided the burgeoning careers of hundreds of post-doctoral research fellows and research associates, and dozens of graduate students. In the past five years, she helped create the yearly Career Symposium, established the biannual Postdoctoral Fellow Recruitment Symposium, and organized the inaugural Arnold Strauss Fellowship for Research Fellows.

In addition to her mentorship efforts, Wells directs the Epithelial Carcinogenesis and Stem Cell Program and holds appointments in Immunobiology, Molecular and Developmental Biology, and Cancer and Cell Biology. But even in her own significant research pursuits, she never loses sight of the importance of mentorship. She recently established the group “Links Between Cancer and Development,” which fosters collaboration to improve grant submissions.
Wells also has played a key role in helping post-doctoral fellows obtain eligibility for healthcare, retirement benefits, access to childcare, and has been ambitious in helping launch the careers of female researchers.
