Welcome to my Fail Royale Series! In this series, I highlight the many failures of me playing Battle Royale games like PUBG, Fortnite, and Paladins. While Battle Royale is fun we often fail/lose matches more often that we win and I enjoy sharing my spectacular failures in a funny fashion, so sit back and enjoy and who knows you just might get a laugh out of it!

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is a multiplayer online battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of Korean publisher Bluehole. The game is based on previous mods that were developed by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games using the 2000 film Battle Royale for inspiration and expanded into a standalone game under Greene's creative direction. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.

The game was first released for Microsoft Windows via Steam's early access beta program in March 2017, with a full release on December 20, 2017. That same month, the game was released by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox One via its Xbox Game Preview program. By the end of the year, the Steam version had sold over twenty-four million copies and held a peak concurrent player count of over three million, making it the most played game on the platform, while the Xbox One version sold over three million itself within a month after release. The game is also planned to be localized and released by Tencent in China, including two different mobile device versions exclusive to the country.

Battlegrounds received several positive reviews from critics during both its early access period and on final release; reviewers found that while the game still was not fully finished and had some technical flaws, Battlegrounds presented new types of gameplay that could be easily approached by players of any skill level and was highly replayable. The game received several nominations for Game of the Year and other awards for 2017 and is considered the defining game of the battle royale genre. Several other video games, following in Battlegrounds' success, added battle royale-style modes, while a number of clones, primarily out of China, also appeared. PUBG Corporation anticipates Battlegrounds to become an eSport, and has run several small tourneys and introduced in-game tools to help with broadcasting the game to spectators.

A standalone mode, Fortnite Battle Royale, based on the battle royale genre, was released for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in September 2017.


Hero shooter Paladins is getting a battle royale mode, Paladins: Battlegrounds, which will arrive in-game this year.

Paladins already combine some of the best of 2015's card battling gameplay and 2016's hero shooter mechanics, so the addition of 2017's battle royale gameplay makes some kind of sense.

Hi-Rez Studios' free-to-play hero shooter is a huge success on Steam - just like that other game you may have heard of, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Anyway, here's a trailer:

The addition of team-based hero shooting to battle royale gameplay is interesting - although it'll be even more interesting to see if PUBG publisher Bluehole reacts to this announcement the same way it did to Epic's Fornite. Last September, Bluehole exec Chang Han Kim slammed Fortnite's Battle Royale as having "replicated" PUBG's gameplay and ominously pledged to "contemplate further action".
